Mission of ISKCON
The mission of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is founded upon the Seven Purposes established by its Founder-Āchārya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada. These guiding principles define the spiritual direction, activities, and responsibilities of ISKCON worldwide and serve as the foundation for all its temples, centers, and communities, including ISKCON Durham.
At its core, ISKCON’s mission is to promote spiritual knowledge and uplift human society by reawakening humanity’s natural relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna. ISKCON seeks to educate people in the science of bhakti-yoga, the path of loving devotional service, as presented in the ancient Vedic scriptures such as the Bhagavad-gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, and Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita.
One of ISKCON’s primary purposes is to propagate Krishna consciousness throughout the world, helping individuals understand their true spiritual identity beyond temporary material designations. By sharing timeless spiritual wisdom, ISKCON encourages a life based on compassion, self-discipline, devotion, and service to God and all living beings.
ISKCON also aims to bring people together in spiritual fellowship, creating communities centered on devotion to Krishna. Through temples, congregational programs, festivals, and educational initiatives, members and visitors are given opportunities to grow spiritually, develop meaningful relationships, and progress together on the path of devotion.
A central mission of ISKCON is the promotion of sankirtan, the congregational chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu taught that chanting the holy names is the most effective spiritual practice in the present age, capable of purifying the heart and awakening love of God. ISKCON actively encourages this practice through public chanting, temple kirtans, and home programs.
Another important aspect of ISKCON’s mission is the establishment and maintenance of holy places of worship. Temples serve as spiritual sanctuaries where devotees and visitors can engage in prayer, worship (seva), study, and devotional activities in an atmosphere of reverence and joy.
ISKCON also teaches the value of simple, spiritual living, emphasizing principles such as nonviolence, purity, honesty, and gratitude. Through farm communities, educational programs, and lifestyle guidance, ISKCON demonstrates how spiritual values can be practically applied in daily life.
The mission further includes the publishing, distribution, and study of spiritual literature. Srila Prabhupada’s books remain the cornerstone of ISKCON’s teachings, providing authoritative guidance and inspiration for spiritual seekers worldwide.
At ISKCON Durham, these seven purposes guide all spiritual programs, community outreach efforts, festivals, classes, and devotional services. By following Srila Prabhupada’s mission, ISKCON Durham strives to serve the local community while remaining connected to the global ISKCON family, working together to spread peace, devotion, and Krishna consciousness for the benefit of all.
