Founder-Āchārya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada
His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada is the Founder-Āchārya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and one of the most influential spiritual teachers of the modern era. He is revered worldwide for his extraordinary role in bringing the ancient wisdom of Krishna consciousness and Gaudiya Vaishnavism to people of all backgrounds across the globe.
Srila Prabhupada was born as Abhay Charan De on September 1, 1896, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, into a devout Vaishnava family. From an early age, he displayed deep spiritual inclination and devotion to Lord Krishna, guided especially by his father, who encouraged him in devotional practices such as worship and kirtan.
In 1922, Abhay Charan De met his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, a prominent Vaishnava scholar and preacher. This meeting became the turning point of his life. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura instructed him to spread the teachings of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the message of the Bhagavad-gita in the English language throughout the world. Srila Prabhupada accepted this instruction as his life’s mission.
After years of preparation, writing, and deep spiritual practice, Srila Prabhupada formally accepted the renounced order of life (sannyasa) in 1959, dedicating himself completely to preaching Krishna consciousness. During this period, he began translating and writing detailed commentaries on sacred scriptures, including the Srimad Bhagavatam, which would later become foundational texts of the ISKCON movement.
At the age of 69, with little money and no institutional support, Srila Prabhupada undertook a historic journey to the West. In 1965, he traveled from India to the United States aboard the cargo ship Jaladuta, enduring great hardship, illness, and uncertainty. His journey symbolized complete faith in Krishna and absolute dedication to his spiritual master’s instruction.
In July 1966, Srila Prabhupada formally established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in New York City. From a small storefront temple, the movement rapidly grew as people were drawn to the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, the philosophy of bhakti-yoga, and Srila Prabhupada’s pure devotional example.
Over the next 11 years, Srila Prabhupada traveled tirelessly around the world, visiting six continents, giving lectures, initiating thousands of disciples, and establishing over 100 temples, farms, and cultural centers. He emphasized practical spiritual living through temple worship, congregational chanting (sankirtan), devotional study, and compassionate service to humanity.
One of Srila Prabhupada’s greatest contributions was his extensive literary work. He translated and wrote authoritative commentaries on major Vedic scriptures, including:
Bhagavad-gita As It Is
Srimad Bhagavatam (Canto translations and commentaries)
Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita
Numerous other books, essays, and letters
These works have been translated into dozens of languages and are studied worldwide, making Krishna consciousness accessible to millions.
Srila Prabhupada consistently taught that the essence of religion is pure love of God, and that chanting the holy names of Krishna is the most effective spiritual practice in the modern age. His teachings emphasized humility, compassion, discipline, and devotion, while promoting unity beyond race, nationality, or social background.
Srila Prabhupada departed from this world on November 14, 1977, in Vrindavan, India, leaving behind a living spiritual movement that continues to grow. His legacy lives on through ISKCON’s temples, communities, educational institutions, humanitarian initiatives, and millions of followers inspired by his words and example.
Today, Srila Prabhupada remains the eternal Founder-Āchārya of ISKCON, and all activities of the society are guided by his teachings, instructions, and books. His life stands as a timeless example of faith, courage, and selfless devotion to Lord Krishna, continuing to illuminate the spiritual path for generations to come.
